This is not to say that Champion is not a historian. He is, and we can trace his interest in history to his father, Edward Champion, who, like Peter Whigham, was a professor of history at the University of Edinburgh. Even as a boy, though, Champion was a poet.

Like so many poets, Champion is influenced by the work of John Dryden, particularly in Absalom and Achitophel, and Religio Laici. He also, like so many poets, is a champion of the ancient world. His The Dwarf and the Giant (2004), sometimes cited as his Absalom and Achitophel, perfectly illustrates the idea that the 'Ancient World' must be taken as a shorthand: a shorthand for the pagan world of the ancient world, for the long past, for the pre-Christian world of the ancient world, for the pre-Christian world of the Roman Empire, for the early medieval world of the Roman Empire, and for the worlds of the early medieval world and the early modern world of the Roman Empire. Champion's history is this history. His vision is this vision. His thought is this thought. In short, he is the ancient world.

The poems of which Champion has written are conscious of history. But it is history as it is, history as it really is. The poet has no interest in what is typically called 'history as a narrative'. He is not interested in narrating the past, but in simply recording it, in recording the past as it really was, as it really is, of what really happened.

In a moment of post-9/11 domestic isolation, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and in the aftermath of the US invasion and occupation of Iraq, Champion's writing has become even more relevant than it was previously. Despite the vaunting neo-faux-mythicism, the steely-eyed faux-irony, and the tiresome expositional jeremiads of his early work, the poet has always been admirably open to the world, to experience, and to the questions of human nature. The questions of culture, religion, and of ethics are topics on which he has had something to say.
