I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) that came with El Capitan. When I got it a year ago, I used migration assistant to transfer my information onto it from a Time Machine backup of my previous laptop. My Final Cut Studio (Final Cut Pro 7.0.3) software was transferred to my new laptop during that migration. Sometime shortly after Sierra came out, I updated to the new os. I honestly can't remember if I ever tested to see if FCP worked on my new computer at that time while running either El Capitan or Sierra.
Thanks for the reply. As stated in my update, I was actually able to get through the Final Cut Studio installation after installing the Sierra software update 10.12.5 (release 5/15/17). Not sure what in the update made the difference, but the black screen that I experienced 3 times while trying to install running 10.12.4 did not occur for me once I updated to 10.12.5. Got through the entire install process and launched FCP 7.0 successfully. I then dowloaded the Pro Applications Update from Apple Support to update to FCP 7.0.3. Motion and Cinema Tools aren't compatible with Sierra, but the other programs seem to be working (though I haven't had time to extensively test anything).
I was here looking for an answer unrelated but have to say (if its operating seamlessly) this is the best accidental find in years. I want to run sierra only and final cut 7 but my label rep. (im also a content provider to iTunes as a label, sony affiliate) told me it wouldnt work so i took him at his word and never challenged it. Is there a step by step direction you can post for those of us old timers You actually may know me if you are someone who knows fcp back to its introduction. I was doing some work for Oxygen and i edited my program at their LA post production house. Apple arrived with something they didnt have a name or would share then and asked if i minded if they sat in. I didnt care. The next day the same guy came in with one other and asked if I'd be interested in taking a look at their new platform for editing professsionals. Since i also bought the 562nd mac sold ever in 1984, i couldnt say yes fast enough. Long story short, I became one of the final field testers for what they later called final cut 1. It wasnt quite ready for prime time, but when the third version arrived I made a public statement and sent press releases out to the trades alerting them that their was finally a superior and stable, UNCRASHING ON LINE EDITING MASTERPIECE. I kicked avid and their 3 backups cause you always need a spare, out onto the streen. Love FCP and every show I have produced was off and on lined in this environment. I miss the old STEVE JOBS Apple more every day.
I didn't do anything special for the install. I just used my Final Cut Studio install discs. Running the first CD initiated the install screen I submitted a screenshot of in my first post. I chose to install all the programs in the Final Cut Studio package, though it gives you the option to select/deselect any program. The process took 2-3 hours, with the install software periodically asking me to insert the next disc (I think there are 7 in total). Once that was done, I opened FCP and entered my serial number. It seemed to be running properly, so I backed up my computer and then downloaded the 7.0.3 update that I link to above. When I tried to run it, I got a message saying it was from an unidentified developer, so I had to go to my security system preferences and \"Allow anyway\" to get it to run (or there is a terminal command you can use). The update installed quickly, and when I launched FCP again, all was good. Before I posted here, I watched this YouTube video by Will Moindrot showing him installing FCP7 on Sierra and it running smoothly, which gave me hope in the first place. As for whether or not it is currently (and will continue) operating seamlessly, that I cannot answer. But there's no harm in giving it a shot.
I'd be happy if I can help but I'm not sure I can reconstruct the OS upgrades and the fresh **** I went through, including the replacement of a motherboard. I'd been editing a documentary for about 4 years in FCP 7 so keeping it on a system where it began was essential. I waited until I was finally done and then began an OS upgrade to Sierra. So my focus was on simply getting my computer back.
