The movie is a personal journey for Zhao Di as she takes us through her life and the changes in the society. The cinematography and editing deftly brings out the important moments in her life. In addition, we see the milestones of Singapore in the 1970s as they changed from a country of Malay and Chinese settlers to a multiracial society. The soundtrack is sung by the opera stars of the time. I loved this part, and the songs highlight the mood and the change from the past to the present.
The movie begins with Zhao Di and her husband Jian (Chee-Yin Chew) returning from a vacation in China. The first thing they notice is a new HDB house. They are no longer in the kampong, but the new community makes them feel like a real Singaporean. They settle in, and Jian goes to work. After six months, Jian is promoted and earns a good salary. He buys a new car and a television set. He spends the money on a new bedroom for his son. The next day, he buys a new fridge and beds for his family. In short, he is able to take care of his family with ease. He and the family grow closer and Jian starts to take interest in the family after a while. Meanwhile, Zhao Di starts to feel uneasy with the new neighbourhood she is living in. She feels that she is becoming a different woman. She is also unhappy that she can’t get the HDB land she promised to purchase in her youth.
Song admits that he was initially hesitant to play the role of Kim because of the stereotype that he has to play. However, on watching the film, he found the story presented in the film to be quite relatable and he felt that he could relate to the character. The film was written and directed by a Chinese film-maker and it is not easy to do a comedy about a politician. It is a complicated film.
These courses are available for free, because it is easier for a university to share them with you. However, if you want to earn a lot of money with this, then take Udemy ’s course for $15, or Coursera ’s specializations for free. However, Udemy’s free course is much better.
