While the TPJ is activated during ToM, and during the reorienting of attention, it is also activated during empathy. While theory of mind and empathy have been discussed in relation to the role of the TPJ in social cognition, this is the first paper to demonstrate the overlap between the activation patterns of the TPJ during low-level processes associated with agency and reorienting attention and higher-level processes associated with social cognition. In addition, the overlap in brain activation suggests that the TPJ is a crucial area for both bottom-up processes and top-down processes, or that the TPJ is necessary to integrate both bottom-up and top-down information.
The overlap in brain activation between low-level process and higher-level social-cognitive processes may explain the fact that empathic agents tend to perceive others as autonomous agents, and not as mere extensions of their own mind. For example, the theory of mind (ToM) [6] allows people to reason about the mental states and intentions of others [6]. ToM requires the representation of the agent's goals, represented in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC). In addition, the representation of belief states in the medial frontal cortex (mFC) is necessary for the detection of deception [75, 76]. The right TPJ is activated by all three functions, suggesting that the TPJ integrates all of the information necessary to interpret the mental states of others [70, 81].
Although the TPJ is necessary for both bottom-up and top-down processes, the midline structure of the TPJ may suggest the top-down mechanism is primarily implemented in the left hemisphere. Indeed, a recent review by Moll et al. [57] argues that empathy is a language-independent form of mentalizing, and is implemented in the left hemisphere. The authors further suggest that empathy is a more complex form of ToM, which may be supported by the additional activation of the TPJ in the right hemisphere.
