The Samudrika Shastra is an ancient text on the subject of physiognomy or face reading. Face reading is one of the topics that is treated in the Samudrika Shastra. This text is named after the sage Samudra, the teacher of Atri, the teacher of the gods.
Samudrika Shastra is a chapter of the Shatapatha Brahmana or the book of beginnings. This chapter was written by Atri, the instructor of the gods, to describe the various features and characteristics of the human body. Atri is asked to describe the body of a primordial being. This text also includes Vedic rituals and social institutions. This text is a classification of the human body into its three divisions: physical, subtle, and mental.[25]
The highly developed Vedic ritual and social institutions had already emerged by the seventh century BCE, and Vedic shastras developed from the Vedas to form the main body of early Hindu law. Vedic rituals and social institutions changed throughout the classical and medieval periods, as new forms of ritual and social organization emerged. These evolved from the Veda to become the foundation of the rituals and social institutions of the Hindu religion.[24]
The samudrika-shastras describe various mantras, a theory of cause and effect, and the knowledge of Vedic rituals and sacrifices. Since these manuscripts are not organised by texts, it is not always possible to quote or refer to them directly. Thus, it is necessary to know the text to cite it. Thus, I will cite from a Sanskrit-language (IAST: Sanskrit) edition Samudra-kalpa (Samudrika-lakshana) by Haridasa & Garga,[4] which contains extracts from both earlier and later manuscripts, and which is itself available at Sacred Texts . Haridasa and Garga are believed to have been composed in the 5th and 6th centuries CE, but the text itself is undated. The book has chapters on mantras, the knowledge of rituals and sacrifices, astrology, the sun, the moon, the planets, and the path of action (karma). Since Haridasa and Garga were very widely read in medieval India, it is likely that many of the extracts from the samudrika-shastra in Haridasa’s and Garga’s Samudrika-lakshana were taken from the original and attributed authors.
The Samudrika-nirupana was composed by Vararuchi (also spelled Varadaraja, Vararuchi or Vararuchi I: Charyapada-dipika). The title of the Samudrika-lakshana manuscripts implies that it was a nirupana (brief manual) composed by Vararuchi, but it is not possible to determine whether the Samudrika-nirupana was composed before or after the Samudrika-lakshana.
