In terms of the impact of transactions on database performance, there is one major downside. Although the performance of all data access operations is improved, the database may need to perform more work to ensure the integrity of the data. This leads to more disk and CPU activity.

Committing a transaction may not be immediate. In fact, there may be a delay while the transaction is being readied for commit. This delay means that the transaction will be logged, and if anything goes wrong after the commit, you will be able to recover the previous state of the database. Logging also helps to reduce the likelihood of failures in the future. For example, the logs will contain information that will help you diagnose problems with the database.
