Aki Hills are simultaneously beautiful and horrible. Beauty because of their natural beauty, their rich content of flowers and wildlife, and sometimes their tumultuous weather. Horrible because of the billions of tons of rock they contain. Aki Hills harbor the Shingu landslide, one of the largest ever recorded. The Aki landslide is located in the south-west corner of the Aki Hills. From the west Pacific, the massif was breached from the 1995 M9.1 earthquake. The M7.3 partial rupture developed further, and caused the Aki landslide on 10 October 1998. According to the site, this landslide had the largest volume of rock displacement ever recorded, with a volume of 100 million cubic yards. Its center was at altitudes between 5200 and 5350 meters. The volume of this landslide is twice as large as that of the San Andreas Fault in California. Most of this rock later dumped on the east Pacific side of the volcano, an obvious locations for a large debris slide. Destructive earthquakes and >10 km^2-sized landslides have been felt. The landslide mobilized the massif by compaction and desiccation into a sea of rubble. Most of it rests on deep and high areas of talus yielding a high compressive stiffness that deforms on a time scale of thousands of years, and is a good seismic hazard until a future landslide. An alternative scenario is a delayed failure, when this landslide is arrested for a long time. The site also notes that it is possible that this landslide could be the direct result of the San Andreas Fault rupture, but such an interpretation is only speculative as no reliable data is available at present.
Self-healing rocks are material that have the ability to change its structure, as seen in micro-cracks, to self-repair and minimize damage from further loads and stresses. The study of self-healing rocks has potential to allow for new or improved methods to manage the susceptibility of infrastructure such as roads, bridges and dams. d2c66b5586
