all over Maharashtra, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai runs 37 medical colleges affiliated to the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education. Other than these 37 colleges, the MCGM also runs 19 Govt. colleges under Universities of Maharashtra. The total college enrollment in the past three years was 6348 as per the data released in the Commission on Government Colleges, University of Maharashtra report. The total number of seats available in colleges run by the corporation?s 37 medical colleges are 9010 as per the records released by the Commission. The total number of students admitted to the college through all the colleges run by the municipal corporation?s 37 medical colleges was 15814 in the year 2013-2014. The study carried out by the commission to understand the status of governmental colleges is an important step in the right direction. This study of the past three years has highlighted the fact that the college enrolment and the number of students admitted to the college/school was lower than the available seats which can tell us that not all the students get admissions to the college/school even though have the capacity to fill the available seats. Under-utilisation of the prescribed seats can be interpreted as a sign of under-resourced schools in Mumbai. Through this citywide study of the government-run colleges and schools, the commission report has brought to the fore the drop-out rate in the government colleges and schools. Should it not be very important to the education department to ensure that the colleges maintain the required standards? Also, why can?t the government colleges and schools pub-licise the transparent results of annual exams of their colleges which can surely help their students get avenues for admissions. This report has shed light on the status of government colleges and has certainly led to an improvement in their strategy of assessment. d2c66b5586
