Raman spectroscopy is a technique where light in the visible spectrum is partially absorbed by molecular bonds in the sample. The light energy of a particular molecule bonds is partially converted to vibrational energy of the bond, resulting in a red shift in the light waves. This is shown graphically as a red line at half height in Figure 1. The region of the light spectrum where the light is partially absorbed corresponds to the region of the light spectrum where there is a shift in the light wave.
