An individual who is in an introverted mood is characterized bya lack of energy. Introverts are more introspective and absentminded, very private, and involve themselves with deep issues in the darkearnest.5 This is a very common mode of communication and is knownas "inner directed", meaning that they concentrate inwardsometimes to the exclusion of communication with others. Introvertsare less concerned with other people’s feelings and are impatient with other'surroundings. However, they are very sociable and usuallyare very good listeners.6
An extrovert is characterized by an active and outgoing personality.Extroverts prefer to spend their time with others. They are sociable, open, cheerful, enthusiastic, and friendly. They are comfortablethroughout most of society and enjoy social activities. Their spontaneityand energy help them to keep their interest in life and they tendnot to be easily bored.7
There is a good deal of contention that there is a "mindreading" component of communication, 8 or that people do not simply tell each other what they are thinkingwhen they are speaking, but actually do a form of mindreading andguess what the other person is thinking. This raises a question aboutmethodological challenges associated with doing research in thisarea.
A good question is "how do we know whether someone is lying or not?"Saying anything in a negative light is very difficult. A single word maybe interpreted by the person receiving it to mean somethingdifferent from the original meaning.
Communication is a two-way process. At its most basicsense it requires a minimum of two people: a person who sendsa message and then a recipient. James Borg argues that humancommunication consists of only 7 percent words. All the rest isfrom body language and paralinguistic clues such as tone andinflection.3Another researcher, Albert Mehrabian, argues that 35percent of communication occurs face-to-face whereas the restcomes from non-verbal communication.4 Both studies point to thefact that words are merely just a small portion of the communicationprocess. d2c66b5586
