The score does offer some interesting sonic experimentation, such as an instrumental piece that sounds like a noisy elevator. It is heard at the very beginning of the film and at the very end, and the whole movie has that same sound. Also, when the astronauts finally get to the space station, they enter a room that sounds like a concert hall, and it is so massive that it sounds almost like a chamber orchestra. There are also many classical pieces that don't quite fit the stylistic mood of the movie, but still don't sound out of place, either.

The movie is scored by David Julyan, who is best known for his work with Ben Affleck and director Chris Nolan. His collaboration with Nolan on the Dark Knight trilogy has probably won him a cult following, though Julyan has done plenty of big budget work as well. He has also composed for the likes of The Bourne Identity, the Terminator 2 and The Matrix movies. Julyan is also the primary composer for Oblivion. Ben Frost, who has worked with director Christopher Nolan, is his co-composer on the film.

Gonzalez directed and cowrote the script with Alex Tse. Tse was co-writer with Nolan on Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Elysium reunites him with Nolan for the first time since Batman Begins.
