Pendergrass returned home in the summer of 1982, and began rehabilitation. He said that he would have no problems performing on stage again; in fact, he said, he would rather perform in a wheelchair than walk. Pendergrass stated that his disability was a blessing in disguise; he said that he had spent the last five years of his life being angry and bitter, but that his recovery had given him the opportunity to think about things differently. Pendergrass was the first disabled performer to set aside his disability and become a symbol of hope for people with disabilities. He has since hosted three telethon efforts to raise money for Philadelphia's rehabilitation center, Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital, and he has participated in the opening ceremonies of the 32nd Street Theatre, a community centre for the city's disabled. On the 30th anniversary of his accident, Pendergrass attended the event in a wheelchair.
In the days following the accident, rumors began to emerge that Pendergrass was gay or bisexual. However, Pendergrass would soon dispel such rumors through his music. He had already been the subject of rumors about his sexuality since the late 1970s; these rumors were fuelled by his lifestyle, which included a string of bad relationships, both with women and men, and his propensity for showing up to gigs early and wearing a dress, high heels and makeup. He openly admitted to a sexual orientation other than heterosexual, but would not go into details. According to friends, Pendergrass was open and honest about his life, despite the rumors that were swirling around him.
In high school, Pendergrass was a student in the famous Tuskegee experiment that grew out of the segregated south. Pendergrass and his friends, who were not treated very fairly because they were African American, often thought about the world from a different perspective.
