Telling the story from Madea's point of view, she has two great lines that are repeated through the play which is why the film will never be as great as the play. In one Madea said "I'm so mad right now,...I'm going to be...mad for the rest of my life!" and in the other she says "I don't come for him. I come for me. That's how I make it... ALWAYS!"
Cicely Tyson, Madea's grandmother, would also play multiple characters in the play. Her character, a physician, was first played in the film by Roscoe Orman who was the last person to play the role of Dr. Tyson before Cicely Tyson, who had played the role for decades. Cicely received her Academy Award nomination in 1983 for her portrayal of the grandmother. She had already become an Academy Award-winning actress with her performance in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman in 1979.
After Cicely's appearance in the play was cut out of the film, Perry made her reappearance in the film by having her read the part from her novel The Good Black Witch. However, her grand re-entry into the film happened when she gave her acceptance speech at the end of the Academy Awards and Oprah Winfrey called out her name on stage. It was then that Oprah, who is the owner of OWN TV Network where Perry gets his shows from, revealed that Cicely Tyson is Perry's mother. Tyson's performance in the film is also in contrast to how she performed in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman where she played a character who only says "Yes, Miss" to her interlocutors. Willis and Perry had wanted to portray this new portrayal of Tyson and they worked closely with her to achieve her vision. d2c66b5586
